There are various ways to redirect a domain name to a different domain or subdomain and one of them is by creating a CNAME record. In case you own a domain and you've set up a site using some online service which supplies you with a service subdomain, you could easily link the two by creating a CNAME record for your-domain.com that points to subdomain.provider.com. What you will achieve with this is that www.your-domain.com will be in the web browser address bar while it opens the already mentioned website from the servers of the third-party provider. It is very important to know that if you set up a CNAME record, any other records your domain may have will stop working, so you can't have both a CNAME record directing to one provider and working email addresses with a different one. The CNAME record is always an alpha string, not a number, and often further configuration may be necessary with the other company.

CNAME Records in Hosting

Setting up a CNAME record using our hosting is really easy. Our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel has a section dedicated to the DNS records of your domain names, so you can set up a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted in your account in only a few easy steps. You will find a video tutorial inside the same section in which you can see the process first-hand. This feature offers you various options - if you set up a company website on our end, for example, the workers can use their e-mails with the company domain name, not with the address of our mail server. If you choose to create a website by using a different provider which offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain address hosted here and use it for the website. Last, but not least, in case you have an online store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you could set up a CNAME record for the www subdomain and point it to the main domain name, so all your clients will be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server through our company and you want to set up a CNAME record, it will take no more than a few mouse clicks to complete this task. The plans are handled using our in-house built Hepsia hosting CP in which you will discover a section devoted to the DNS records of the domain names and subdomains hosted inside the account. To create a CNAME record, you'll simply have to select the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), key in where the latter will be pointed to and save the modification. The new record will be active almost right away in our system and will propagate worldwide within a few hours. Modifying or deleting an existing CNAME record within the account is just as easy and takes a click. If you experience any difficulties, you can go through our comprehensive help article, watch the short video on the topic that we have added in the Control Panel, or just contact us for assistance.
